03 — Why KLWM

An ideal airport for flight training.

01

A towered airport

KLWM has a control tower, so you'll learn real radio procedures from your first lesson. You get that without the airliner traffic of a big airport.

02

Two runways

Runways 5/23 and 14/32 mean more flyable days and great crosswind practice when you want it.

03

Close to Boston airspace

You'll learn to work with Boston Approach and busy New England airspace without training in the middle of it.

04

Varied, scenic terrain

The Merrimack River, the Atlantic coast, and the White Mountains on a clear day are all within an easy training flight.

05

Easy to get to

Right off I-495 with quick access to I-93, Route 114 and Route 125, and a short ride from the MBTA stop in Lawrence.

06

Four seasons of experience

Training through New England's seasons builds the weather judgment and adaptability every pilot needs.

Scenic flights

See New England from above.

Not looking to learn? Our pilots fly scenic tours over the Merrimack Valley, Plum Island, the North Shore coast and the Boston skyline, with room for up to three passengers.

When can I start?

We're a new flight school at Lawrence Municipal Airport, opening in early December 2026. We're booking discovery flights and lessons now. Contact us to reserve your first date.

How long does it take to get a private pilot license?

The FAA minimum is 40 flight hours. Most students nationwide finish in roughly 60–75 hours. Flying two or three times a week, many people finish in 4–6 months. Flying once a week usually takes longer, because more time goes to reviewing.

Do I need any experience to book a discovery flight?

None at all. Your instructor walks you through the preflight, you'll handle the controls in the air, and the time can be logged toward your license if you continue.

Where exactly are you located?

We fly out of Lawrence Municipal Airport (KLWM) in North Andover, Massachusetts — just off I-495, about 25 miles north of Boston and a few minutes from the New Hampshire line.

Can I train if I live in Boston or on the North Shore?

Yes. KLWM is an easy commute from Boston, the North Shore and Southern New Hampshire. See our pages for Boston, the North Shore and Southern NH for directions and tips.
